Reno.....more specifically, the Reno Peppermill is one of our favorite mini-getaways. It's got swanky rooms, tasty restaurants, a relaxing spa, and endless entertainment, ie gambling! It's like a mini Vegas. And because we are club members, we often rack up enough comps for free rooms, free play money and free meals. We can spend a whole weekend without ever leaving the building. It's awesome, really.
We typically make several trips throughout the year and It's usually the three of us: me, Brian and our friend Nathan. But last year must have sped by, because when we were all talking about making a trip, we discovered that it had been over a year since we've gone. Nathan has a new gf and wanted to let her in on the great Reno Peppermill experience. So, we booked a trip about 2 weeks ago.
Naturally, the dry, non-winter-like weather we've been having was against us and it decided to bring the biggest storm of the year the weekend we decided to go. Brian and I both don't have cars that can drive in snow, so we borrowed his mom's Highlander. And I'm so glad we did. On Friday, when we were driving up, it was POURING rain. It took us about 4 hours to get there and was the most intense 4 hours of driving. By the time we got there, instead of hitting the tables like we usually do, we went straight to bed. That drive wore.us.out. By the next morning, there was snow on the ground. By the time we left to go home on Sunday, chains were required over the pass. Luckily, the Highlander was a 4WD, so they let us through without chains. It was slow-going, but man was it beautiful! There's nothing like looking at a freshly fallen snow landscape. The trip home took a little over 5 hours, so it was a good thing we left earlier than we were planning.
So, what did we do in Reno. Um, gamble of course!! And boy did I! While Brian and Nathan are typically in a poker tournament or at a table game, I'm typically at a slot machine. I'm pretty partial to penny slots. I usually do pretty well too. This time was no exception! I was making my rounds, looking for my favorite machines, playing a little here and a little there. I started noticing that I was hitting small progressive jackpots. I NEVER hit progressives. Even if they're $5. But I was on a roll! I hit a $20 progressive here, a $50 progressive there. I actually told myself, wow, this is weird, I never hit these. Not 10 mins later, I hit the big one......
Oh yeah. That's not just 1,000 credits people. That's $1,000.....100,000 credits! I looked around and of course no one was around me. Go figure. The waitress came by and dropped off my drink and I told her that I need to toast something! I hit a jackpot! She didn't seem all that impressed, but this little old lady was walking by, heard me and stopped to see what was going on. She was all excited....she asked why I wasn't screaming. I said I wanted to but there was no one around and I felt a little embarrassed. She said, don't be and scream!! I didn't, but we gave each other high-fives. And then I texted Brian to rub it in.....
By the time I had collected my winnings, Nathan and his gf had arrived and I got to replay my jackpot. It was so fun! The rest of the time, us girls kept playing slots here and there and the guys were at the tables. Everything was back to normal. I promised myself that I wouldn't touch my winnings for the rest of the trip, so I gambled with the money I had brought with me. For the most part, we did ok, but I was the big winner of the trip. Usually it's one of the guys, but this time, it was my turn!
Unfortunately, my other Peppermill ritual didn't happen. I like to gamble, but there comes a time when I just need a break from the casino. The beauty of the Peppermill is that it has a really nice spa, Spa Toscana. I like to book a nice massage and spend some time in their plush robe, relaxing in there garden nook and read my book. It's heaven. But, I didn't make an appointment before we left and they were booked the whole weekend. BUMMER. I really needed that massage. Oh well, there's always next time.
And there will be a next time. Only a little sooner than over a year.......
